Portland Community College presents 2012 Summer Sustainability Institute

Monday, July 9 – Friday, July 13, 2012 and Friday, August 24, 2012
Portland, Oregon

Are you a high school or college instructor interested in adding and integrating sustainability into your curricula? Are you teaching in fields related to green building design, construction and maintenance?

Portland Community College, with funding from the National Science Foundation, is pleased to offer the 2012 Summer Sustainability Institute (SSI) in Portland, Oregon. PCC’s Technical Education program in Landscaping, Operations, Construction and Architectural Design/ Drafting/Interior Design (LOCATE) supports instructors in these fields to develop and update their curriculum in order to prepare students for careers related to green building.

The SSI offers participants beginner/intermediate-level training focused on residential design, building construction, interior design, landscaping, performance codes, and facilities maintenance technology. Experts share new advances in green building and lead activities on a variety of sustainability issues, including integrated design planning, residential green building and remodeling, energy and water efficiency, affordability, and changing industry standards. The daily trainings, coupled with visits to green sites in the Portland metro region, leave attendees prepared and inspired to integrate sustainable concepts and practices into their curriculum.

The SSI concludes with a one-day Summit on Friday, August 24, at which participants will submit their curriculum changes and receive additional support and resources for their course revisions. Participants will receive all necessary course materials and a stipend of $500 upon their completion of the SSI.

Interested in applying?

High school, community college and university instructors who are teaching in fields related to green building are invited to apply for this professional development opportunity. Those accepted attend the SSI at no cost. (Out-of-region applicants will be considered based on availability.)

No prerequisites are required and CEUs can be arranged.

Travel costs are not included but lodging at the Hospitality Inn will be reserved and covered for out-of-town guests from Sunday, July 8 to Friday, July 13.

Participants will be chosen based on their ability to attend all of the SSI, the quality of their course revision proposals and the relevancy of the SSI to their disciplines, recognizing the need to have a fair distribution across disciplines, institutions, and states.
